About Hum'nbird Corgis:

Hum'nbird Pembroke Welsh Corgis is located between Virginia and Maryland in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, near Shepherdstown and Martinsburg. It's about a 90 minute drive from Washington DC. Hum'nbird is a small private hobby kennel. Our corgis are first and foremost our beloved pets. Our goal is to create a wonderful corgi who is a pleasure to show and is also an excellent and loving companion.

Whether you're curious about Hum'nbird Corgis, looking for a puppy, or just seeking information, please accept this invitation to explore our site. Your inquiries are welcome.

Carrie is an AKC licensed judge, and enjoys judging across the U.S. Breeding the occasional litter with the dream of creating another Specialty winner is very exciting and gives her much joy, as does placing her pet quality puppies from those litters in excellent homes.

Carrie's kennel name 'Hum'nbird' originates from a lifelong love of birds. The hummingbird is a combination of beauty, brains, and independence in an active package - to her these same features are also found in the enchanting Pembroke Welsh Corgi!

Carrie is a member of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America, Inc., Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of The Potomac, Inc., Golden Gate Pembroke Welsh Corgi Fanciers, Inc., The Welsh Corgi League (UK) and the Canaan Dog Club of America. She is a former board member and President of the Golden Gate PWCF, is currently on the PWCCA Genetics Committee, and is Board Member of the Canaan Dog Club of America Membership Requirements Survey Committee. She has worked closely with Golden Gate's Corgi Rescue while on the West Coast and has placed many rescue dogs. In addition she also worked for Santa Rosa Bird Rescue.

The Beginning:

Carrie's first corgi Larchmont's Knee Highs did not finish her championship, actually 'AJ' was shown at only one specialty many years ago. But she made the cut in a large class, and that was enough to get her enthusiastic owner hooked! All of Carrie's homebred corgis descend from either AJ or our wonderful brood bitch Ch. Beaukay's Double Delight, dam of Ch. Hum'nbird Valedictorian and Ch. Hum'nbird Holiday On Ice.

The Philosophy:

Carrie's goal is to create her interpretation of the ideally conformed corgi, with a terrific temperament, lovely expression and workmanlike movement. Beauty and soundness must be combined with that intangible feature known as quality to produce superior Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

Carrie considers successful show corgis to be those considered as such by our peers at Pembroke Welsh Corgi Specialty shows. Fellow breeders can best understand the planning and vision which must be present to produce excellent animals, as well as recognizing and rewarding the virtures that are so difficult to reproduce. She is most proud when a breeder judge gives her corgis a specialty win. That being said, it is very important to keep the balance offered by the all round judge's eye, that of balance and correct canine soundness. It is very exciting to be awarded a Group win or placement by an esteemed all breeds judge.

Beauty and movement are just some of Carrie's goals. Realistic breeders recognize that most corgis from Champion parents will live in loving pet homes, either from puppyhood or later after finishing their title. Therefore excellent temperament and true physical soundness is paramount.

All Hum’nbird corgis have had their hips x-rayed and eyes checked, and are clear for Von Willebrand’s disease as determined by DNA testing. In addition, we have begun to test some of our corgis to see if they are carrying the fluff factor so that we may better plan some breedings.

We abide by the guidelines presented by the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America, Inc. Code of Ethics. For information about the PWCCA go to www.pembrokecorgi.org
